Expanding Access to Affordable, Quality Healthcare

Introduction

Australia’s healthcare system is one of the best in the world, but it has been decimated by consecutive Liberal and Labor governments.

Rising healthcare costs, long wait times, and unequal access are leaving too many Australians behind.

Key Issues

Healthcare Access: Many Watson residents struggle with long wait times and a lack of access to essential healthcare services. Ziad believes that every resident should have access to timely and comprehensive care, regardless of their circumstances.

Mental Health: Mental health services are underfunded in Watson, leaving many residents without the support they need. Ziad is committed to expanding mental health resources to ensure that everyone in Watson has access to the care they deserve.

Preventative Care: Preventative care is essential for reducing the strain on our healthcare system and improving overall community health. Ziad’s plan focuses on enhancing community-based healthcare services to prevent illnesses before they require

The Facts

  • Healthcare Access: 25% of Watson residents report difficulty accessing timely healthcare, with long wait times being a significant barrier.
  • Mental Health: Mental health services in Watson are underfunded, with only 60% of residents able to access the care they need.
  • Preventative Care: Preventable hospital admissions have increased by 10% over the past five years, indicating a need for better community-based healthcare services.

Our Plan: Healthcare for All

1. Expanding Medicare Coverage
  • Add universal mental health and dental care to the Medicare Benefits Schedule
  • Expand access to allied health services (physio, dietetics, etc.) for chronic disease patients
2. Reducing Out-of-Pocket Costs
  • Eliminate gap payments for GP visits by boosting the bulk billing rebate
  • Cap essential medications at $5 per prescription for pensioners, low-income families, and chronic disease patients
3. Improving Rural and Remote Access
  • Offer incentives like debt relief, housing support, and higher rebates for health workers in rural communities
  • Expand telehealth access nationwide with upgraded infrastructure and provider support
4. Prioritising Preventive Care
  • Launch free annual health check-ups for all Australians, including mental health and cancer screenings
  • Roll out a national health literacy campaign to promote early intervention and healthy living
5. Strengthening Primary Healthcare
  • Invest in training and recruiting more GPs and primary care workers, especially in underserved areas
  • Establish Integrated Care Hubs where GPs, specialists, and allied health professionals work together to manage chronic disease

The Impact

  • More coverage for services Australians actually need
  • Lower costs for GPs, medicine, and ongoing care
  • Better access in rural and low-income areas
  • Healthier communities through early detection and preventive care
  • A stronger Medicare system, fit for the future
